This beautiful Vintage 1974 BMW R90/6 has just been extensively rebuilt and reconditioned; front to back, inside out. The frame was painted the proper Avus Black. All the bodywork was painted Grey Metallic, with the traditional BMW dual pinstripes applied by hand. New battery cover decals were installed. The bike is equipped with the larger 22 Liter fuel tank, which is much in demand. New original braided cloth covered fuel line was installed. The bike is completely “correct” as it was produced at the BMW factory, with the exception of the black long stem mirrors, and the grey color. The serial numbers match.
All the other work was done by our BMW Factory Trained Service Manager as a Winter project. He has 35 years BMW mechanic experience. The engine was completely disassembled and cases, covers, cylinders, and heads beadblasted. The crankshaft was fitted with new main and rod bearings. We had a pair of cylinders and pistons that were still at minimum clearance; we honed them and fitted new rings. The heads were rebuilt. A new timing chain and tensioner were installed. All other parts were carefully inspected for condition; only the best were kept. All new gaskets and seals were installed.
The 1974 only kickstart transmission received the same treatment, we beadblasted the case and did a total rebuild. The clutch was cleaned and inspected and found to be in very good condition. A new throwout bearing was installed. The carburetors were rebuilt. All electrics were carefully inspected and upgraded as necessary. The Tach and Speedo instrument assembly was reconditioned.
The front forks were rebuilt, and new steering bearings installed. The front brake master cylinder was rebuilt. New swingarm bearings were installed. Both wheels were disassembled, beadblasted, new bearings set up and installed, rims polished, and relaced and trued. A new Continental front tire was installed, and a near new rear (all we had at the time).
A very nice correct 1974 used seat was picked out, and new trim installed. All rubber boots are new or in very good condition. The exhaust is in very good condition. The beautiful aluminum turn signals were polished, as well as the fork caps, shock covers, etc. A new sealed battery is installed. There is a tool tray but no tool kit. There is a key for the ignition, and another for the fork and seat locks. We have no key for the (unlocked) fuel cap.
The bike has had 200 break-in miles, and everything was rechecked and readjusted as necessary. It is all ready to go for the 2009 riding season. To have all this work done on your air cooled BMW would cost between $5000 and $6000. This is your chance to have a beautiful near new Vintage 1974 BMW R90/6, which is ready to ride for decades, at a reasonable price.
This bike would make an excellent and stylish daily commuter, or a weekend back roads tourer, or a bike to ride to a Bike Nite gathering or Vintage Bike Rally. You could finally do that lifelong dream “4 corners” Continental Tour on this bike, and then you could still hand it down to your children or grandchildren.
